Millennium Development Goal 6
Millenium Development Goals
This month, we focus on Millennium Goal #6:  Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. Malaria causes over 300 million acute illnesses each year, and at least 1 million deaths annually.  This disease kills one African child every 30 seconds, and often leaves survivors with learning disabilities or brain damage.  40% of the world’s population (mostly in poorer countries) are at risk of contracting malaria.

Millenium Development Goals 4 and 5
Millenium Development Goals

This summer, we look at two of the MDG’s: 

  • Goal #4: Reduce Child Mortality
  • Goal #5: Improve Maternal Health
Respectively, these goals aim to reduce the mortality rate of children under age five by 2/3, and the maternal mortality ratio (pregnancy or childbirth-related deaths per 100,000 live births) by 75%, between 1990 and 2015.  The goals also seek universal access to reproductive health care by 2015.

This month, we are examining MDG #3:  Promote gender equality and empower women.  The United Nations specifically targeted eliminating gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and in all levels of education no later than 2015.

During March, we focus on MDG #2: Achieve universal primary education.  This goal is to ensure that by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.
